If you play a variety of golf courses with different fairway or sand conditions you may need more than one set of wedges that fit the various conditions you may encounter. Wedges for:
Soft Fairways - You may need more bounce on your wedges for playing on soft lush well watered fairways so the club does not dig excessively.
Hard Fairways - You may need wedges with little little or no bounce for the hard red clay fairways that do not get enough water to keep the short shots from bouncing into the ball and hitting that skinny line drive shot that scoots right over the green.
Hard Compact Sand - Small narrow sole with the right bounce will pop shots out that the wide fat sole clubs skinny over the the green or into the side of the trap.
Soft Fluffy Sand - Now we need the wide sole with a lot of bounce to keep from digging in too deeply and leaving the shot in the trap.
Filling the gap between your Pitching Wedge and Sand Wedge - Got a 47° or 48° Pitching Wedge and a gap to your 56° Sand Wedge with no in between club for that in between distance? That is why the Gap Wedge was made, to fill the GAP at 51° or 52° to match the 4° gaps of your other irons.
Hitting the High Soft Lob that stops - Got a lot of high lofted greens with large traps surrounding them? Need a club to lob the ball over these craters onto the green and stop quickly?
