What happens with custom fitting.

A few years ago I had a Mini Tour player who was custom fit by his sponsoring OEM. He brought his custom fit clubs to me to check them out. Below is a before and after look at the results. The before is how he hit is new custom OEM clubs sent to him to use on the tour. The after is a custom fit 5 iron I put together with tour van epoxy. He hit it so good he kept hitting it and all went at the pin. That is the large grouping in the center. He wanted to try drawing it and fading it and those are the few shots to left and right you see. Notice all shots are on the green, even those he hit with a draw and hit with a fade. He had total control of his shots with my custom fit club.

The OEM fit clubs gave him a 90 mph swing speed with the 5 iron and my custom fit 97 mph. The OEM fit club was 189 yards, my custom fit was 205 yards. Don’t be fooled that because a company can mass produce golf clubs that they can also custom fit golf clubs. That would be like buying a suit off the rack and expecting a perfect fit without alterations, compared to going to a tailor to get a custom fit suit.

Tom Wishon wrote a book “The Search for the Perfect Golf Club”, in it he outlined 12 Myths that can Wreck Your Golf Game. From the book he created a booklet with the 12 Myths.

  • Myth #1 – Modern Golf Clubs hit the ball farther.
  • Myth #2 – The lower the loft on your driver, the farther the ball will go.
  • Myth #3 – You can’t go wrong with well known Brand Name golf clubs.
  • Myth #4 – Your new driver has a larger sweet spot.
  • Myth #5 – When I buy a club with an S flex shaft, I know I am getting a Stiff Flex.
  • Myth #6 – The faster you swing the stiffer your shaft should be.
  • Myth #7 – The longer the length of a driver, the farther you’ll hit the ball.
  • Myth #8 – My clubs are just like the one the Pros use.
  • Myth #9 – Women’s clubs are designed for Women golfers.
  • Myth #10 – I’m not a good enough golfer for custom fit clubs to matter.
  • Myth #11 – I was custom fit at the Big Golf Store
  • Myth #12 – I bought a Big Company’s adjustable hosel driver so I already have been fit.

Another Before and After Example

Ian wanted more distance and we added 23 yards to his average carry distance. A close up will reveal one wild shot off the fairway and of the other 14 all but 3 are on the green and the 3 are on the fringe. Club Speed from 100 to 107, Ball Speed from 142 to 151, Launch Angle from 7.7 to 13.4, Carry Distance from 244 to 267. Ian reported that his actual gain on course after getting adjusted to his new driver was about 35 yards and much more consistently in the fairway.

After 20 years of fitting golfers I’ve developed a fitting system that works online and will fit most golfers almost as good as being here. If you don’t have a qualified clubfitter near you I can help!

I also have success in online lessons to help your golf swing. I don’t have a series of videos of me showing you how but I do know how to create or find videos that illustrate how to improve your swing based on the videos you send me to analyze. I will analyze your golf swing and find videos to illustrate how to correct your flaws and drills to help you overcome your flaws. It’s pretty easy today to get someone to use your phone to save and send me videos of your progress and pretty easy for me to coach you into a better swing based on those videos you send me. Sign up for lessons today and let’s get started.

If you love golf and want to talk golf and learn I also offer a Basic Site Membership so you can join my Insider Club and chat golf all the time. Site members get substantial discounts on items in my shop and other benefits too.

The reason for the fitting is to determine what you need to buy, Not to adapt what you already bought! The purpose of the fitting is to determine what head design is best for you, what shafts are best for you, and what kind of clubs you need in your set. What design and loft for your driver, what designs and lofts and how many fairways, how many hybrids, how many irons, how many wedges. All fitted to produce more center face contact at impact for straighter, longer golf shots. What is the best combination of clubs in your bag to help you play better and score better?

When you complete my fitting form I have the information I need to build a set of clubs that match up to your swing characteristics. Except in very rare cases you will be able to hit your new clubs far better than any you’ve ever hit before. If you sign up for my Basic fitting I will be able to fine tune some of the features of your clubs to allow you to hit them a bit better in most cases. Of course nothing beats you being here in person so I can watch you and collect the data for every swing, but it comes really close.

Club Assembly & Construction helps too

The purpose of my building procedure is to fine tune every aspect of your clubs so they are as consistent as possible and they allow you to be as consistent as possible. Each procedure makes each club a bit better and the sum of the whole is that you have a better set of club that will make you more consistent and accurate.

I use a very detailed construction procedure for your custom clubs. Each iron shaft is measured in 3 key locations along the shaft to match up with the fitting form. These measurements are compared and sorted into the best shaft for each of your irons based on the loft of your irons. Shafts are assigned to each iron based on these calculations. This sorting makes it easier for you to get the maximum from each club.

Once the shafts are sorted they are cut for raw length and each shaft is spined and FLOed to once again allow you to get the maximum consistency from each club.

When the clubs are assembled they are MOI (Moment of Inertia) matched to make each iron swing the same regardless of length. Other than length each iron feels the same allowing you to eliminate as much as possible the need to have a bit of a different swing for each iron in the bag.

Weight is a very important element in fitting

Weight is important in various ways. Total weight of the club as well as how the weight is distributed on the club. We seldom know what the total weight is but it is mainly controlled by the weight of the shaft. All like heads are approximately the same weight and the same can be said of grips. Custom heads and custom grips may vary slightly. So the shaft that can vary in weight from 40 grams to 130 grams is the major factor in total weight and swing weight or MOI. The total weight of the club can have a major influence in your swing path and face angle at impact and your swing weight or MOI a major factor in face angle.

The importance of length in your clubs is seen in several ways also. Swing plane and swing path are changed when we change the length of your clubs. Also total weight and MOI are changed when we change the length. The longer the club is the more difficult it is to control.

The total weight, swing weight/MOI and length of your clubs must match your swing speed and tempo, your transition force and quickness of your downswing transition, and your overall strength. These things influence how the golf club feels and feel is of major importance to good fitting.

Set Make-Up, or what clubs you have in your bag is key to a better game.

  • Having a 3 wood in your bag is not a good idea for most golfers. Most golfers can hit a 5 wood as far if not farther than a 3 wood unless they have a swing speed in the 100 mph range, and far more accurately. Unless they are a skilled golfer hitting a 14° – 15° 3 wood off the ground and getting it in the air is too difficult.
  • How about a 7 wood or 9 wood in the bag? Or, more Hybrids than fairways? Either are far easier to hit than long irons. With iron lofts becoming less and less on modern clubs, maybe you should ask yourself what really is the longest iron in my bag I’m comfortable hitting? Would you hit more greens if you had a 7 wood or 9 wood or hybrids to replace the longer irons?
  • How about them wedges? When wedge lofts getting lower and lower maybe you need more wedges in the bag and also bounce angles that fit your turf conditions and the sand in your sand traps. Pitching wedges used to be 52° clubs and today many of them are as low as 46° or less. Now that the PW is an 8 iron effectively maybe you need more wedges that duplicate the lofts of the 9 iron and distances between down to the sand wedges at 55° – 56°. Maybe you need more wedges in the bag.
  • To sum up, you need a club in your bag for every distance between the longest hitting club (driver) and shortest hitting club (SW or LW). To play better those clubs need to be clubs you can hit well and not necessarily what the manufacturers package in a “set” for you.
